The storing of University Data on USB devices and other mobile medium is strongly discouraged. The lost or theft of such devices may put at risk confidential university information. In the rare circumstance when an employee needs to store University data on a mobile device it is required that the device is encrypted in accordance with the Technology Services Data Security Plan.
To encrypt a USB drive from your macOS computer.
If the USB device contains any files you want to save, copy them to another storage device or volume
Go to your Launchpad and click Disk Utility app.
In the Disk Utility app on your Mac, choose View than select Show All Devices.
In the sidebar, select the storage device you want to encrypt.
Click the Erase button in the toolbar.
Enter a name for the volume.
Click the Scheme pop-up menu, then choose GUID Partition Map.
Click the Format pop-up menu, then choose APFS (Encrypted).
Enter and verify a password, then click Choose.
Click Erase, then click Done, you should now see the encrypted partition from the external drive.
