Apps - Helpful tips and tricks

Here are some helpful tips and tricks that we think might find useful.

Performance Tips

Increasing display quality

If working with graphic intensive applications such as SolidWorks. The image accuracy can be increased to allow for better clarity while working with models if your internet connection has enough bandwidth. If the internet connection does not, this will cause additional slowness and should be unchecked.

  • From the Title Bar on the Horizon Client, click on Options.

  • Select Share Folders.

  • Select the VMWare Blast tab.

  • Select the checkbox next to Allow High Color Accuracy and click Ok.

Working with larger files

Larger files that applications open work best if the files are first copied to the virtual desktop and then opened with the application. Working with files over a network connection can reduce speed. Check out this tip on how to drag and drop files to the virtual desktop.

Application Tips

Potential 4k Resolution Issues

Some applications do not work with 4k resolutions. These applications may open but may have distorted buttons or illegible text.

As a workaround, prior to launching these applications, try changing your resolution to 1920x1080.

Here is a list of applications known not to support high resolution:

  • Ansys WorkBench 2019 R2

  • Simul8

Frozen Applications

Sometimes an application freezes. If closing out of the application and relaunching the application brings up the same frozen application, there are a couple options to fix this. Any unsaved work will be lost.

When using the client

  • Right click on the VMware Horizon Client agent in the taskbar and select Settings.

  • Select the Application tab from the left menu and then select Reset.

When using the browser

  • Select the sidebar menu and click on the three dot menu.

  • Select Settings.

  • Select Reset next to Reset all your running applications.

  • Click Ok to reset the session.

Horizon Client Tips

Dragging and dropping files to the virtual desktop

The horizon client allows for files to be dragged from your local desktop to the virtual desktop. This is useful when you need to work on files that are currently saved on your local computer. This only works from your local computer to the virtual desktop and not vice versa.

  • Select the Restore Down button from the drop down title menu.

  • Left click and hold the file on the local desktop and then drag the file over the virtual desktop until a + (plus) sign appears and then release the mouse.

  • Select the Maximize button in the title menu to make the virtual desktop full screen again.

Using Multiple Monitors

Multiple monitors are supported, however sometimes there are times when one or more monitors may want to be used but not all of them.

  • Select Options from the title bar.

  • Select Share Folders.

  • Select the virtual desktop name to adjust from the left menu.

  • Select the monitor(s) the desktop should appear on and click Ok. To undo this and use all monitors, follow the same steps but un-check all monitors so all are grey.
