The Technology Services Help Desk

Florida Poly’s Department of Technology Services operates the IT Help Desk which is located in the IST Building Commons. You can contact the Help Desk by walk-up service (see floridapoly.edu/technology-services for the current Help Desk hours schedule), by calling 863-874-8888, by emailing helpdesk@floridapoly.edu, or by visiting help.floridapoly.edu.

The Help Desk provides a limited inventory of various computing-related devices available for checkout by students. Information on these options is available at floridapoly.atlassian.net/wiki/x/BAAgI.

Florida Poly NetID Account Services

Your Florida Poly NetID is your personal electronic identifier at the University and serves as your login to many university online services. Students are automatically assigned a NetID upon enrollment at the University. The “Welcome to Florida Poly” email you should have received has information on activating your NetID account. If you need to request a re-send of the activation email, lookup your NetID, or change your NetID password, you can do this at the NetID self-service page at netid.floridapoly.org/accounts/selfservice. You can also view frequently-asked questions (FAQs) about the NetID there. You should also review the information on NetID and password security located there.

Your Florida Poly Email

Email is an official form of the University’s communications with students, as outlined in University policy FPU-3.0011P. As an enrolled student at Florida Poly, you are required to activate and maintain your Florida Poly email account, and regularly check it for official University communications. Your email address will be determined by your NetID; for example, for NetID “phoenix” the email address would be “phoenix@floridapoly.edu”.

To use your Florida Poly email account, you should use an email client such as Microsoft Outlook. Alternatively, you can access your email on the web at outlook.office.com/floridapoly.edu.

The Florida Poly Network

The University provides wireless network access (“WiFi”) both within campus buildings and outside buildings on the main campus. Your Florida Poly NetID and password are used to access the network. Helpful instructions are available in the Help Desk Knowledge Base at https://floridapoly.atlassian.net/wiki/x/ZIAiDQ. Florida Poly provides both high-bandwidth Internet access as well as connectivity to statewide and national research and education networks through Florida LambdaRail.

Campus Computer Labs and Software

Florida Poly has over 425 computers available for student use in classrooms, labs, and general study areas such as the IST Commons. A list of software applications available by room is provided in the Help Desk Knowledge Base at https://floridapoly.atlassian.net/wiki/x/GYAiNg. In addition to these physical computers, the University’s Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) environment provides software over the Internet. The University’s portal for remote and virtual software delivery is available at apps.floridapoly.edu. You can customize your software access environment using your Florida Poly NetID.

Computer and Software Requirements at Florida Poly

While the University provides a rich collection of computer labs and open access computers for student use, Florida Poly also operates a “bring your own device” (BYOD) friendly environment. Students are encouraged to bring a computer to campus that meets or exceeds the recommended minimum requirements posted at floridapoly.atlassian.net/wiki/x/TIBmF. In addition, the department of your major area of study may recommend program-specific computer needs; consult with your major academic department regarding these recommendations.

Printing

Phoenix Print, Florida Poly’s central printing service, allows students to generate hardcopy printouts at printers conveniently located about the campus. The phoenixprint.floridapoly.edu website is the one-stop portal to the Phoenix Print service. Print drivers are available there to allow printing from personally-owned devices, including Windows, mac OS, iOS, Android, and Chrome OS systems. Instructions for various aspects of using Phoenix Print are available in the Technology Services Help Desk Knowledge Base at https://floridapoly.atlassian.net/wiki/x/CgBwEw.

Your Responsibilities When Using University Information Technology

University policy FPU-11.0018P, Appropriate Use of IT Resources, defines the basic responsibilities of anyone using Florida Poly information technology systems and resources. These responsibilities include not using these resources in any way that disrupts or damages the work of others, disrupts normal University operations, or provides unauthorized access to information or systems. You are responsible for any activity originating from your Florida Poly NetID, and agree to maintain the security of your NetID and password and to not share it with anyone. You also agree to ensure that your personal devices have current antivirus and antispyware protection before connecting them to the University’s network, as outlined in policy FPU-11.00115P, Virus and Spyware on Computing Devices. Failure to comply with these responsibilities may result in disciplinary action under the Student Code of Conduct.

Cybersecurity Guidelines

Computer security scams are at an all-time high. Students are strongly encouraged to regularly review information and updates posted on the Networking and Information Security web page (https://floridapoly.edu/technology-services/networking-information-security.php) for guidance.

Student Employment Opportunities in Technology Services

Technology Services offers a variety of opportunities for student employment and internships that provide extremely valuable hands-on work experiences for students pursuing careers in information technology.
